Alternative methods to measure aerosol penetration through a filter

Penetration of 3–10 nm particles through a metal grid has been measured using different experimental methodologies. Two basic schemes have compared: (i) the upstream-downstream (UD), where particle penetration is determined from comparison between aerosol number concentrations at two sampling points, one placed upstream, other downstream, filter; and (ii) filter-dummy (FD), in which outlet geometrically identical chambers, empty containing filter. The test facing was either monodisperse (MONO) or polydisperse (POLY). UD method requires additional measurement (without filter) flow path points it thus more time consuming strategy, but advantage that fabrication an dummy holder not needed. + MONO FD gave results good agreement with well-established fan filter model theory Cheng Yeh. obtained POLY method, fastest one, were less precise accurate. As far as diffusional capture concerned, (using schemes) should be preferred for accurate efficiency; perhaps suitable quick evaluation overall performance given filtration system. • Alternative methods to measure compared.
